Safer ways to get comfortable in the car

Some quick checks can help keep you and other motorists safe on the road.

Road safety is everyone’s responsibility and we’re doing our part on all our roads, responding to incidents when our customers need help. In Queensland, our teams responded to around 13,000 incidents last year – and so far this year has attended more than 1,000 incidents a month (up 8%).

We’ve helped out with: breakdowns; lost loads (everything from building materials to boats); nose-to-tail crashes (especially involving distracted driving during peak hour congestion); rescuing lost animals (including ducks, dogs and possums); overheight vehicles; and pedestrians on our roads.

We’re always ready to help when things go wrong, but there’s things you can do to help reduce your risk of an incident on the road as well, including:

  • Securing your load: Lost load incidents are on the rise, with more than 1,300 reported last year on our roads. Always ensure your load is secured to prevent hazards and delays, and never try to retrieve a lost load from the motorway yourself. Instead, pull over into an emergency stopping bay, put on your hazard lights, and call the Transurban team on 13 33 31.
  • Check the basics before you head out: Make sure you have enough fuel, oil, and give your tyres a regular once-over, too. If you’re driving an EV, make sure it has enough charge.
  • Know your height: If you’re driving a truck or carrying or towing something tall, measure its height before you head off. Clearing one tunnel or bridge doesn’t mean you’ll clear them all – heights aren’t standard across states, cities or even roads. All Brisbane tunnels have a 4.6 metre clearance.

Our 24/7 traffic control room team monitors more than 1,500 CCTV cameras year-round to identify any motorists in need of assistance. If you need help, our team will dispatch a complimentary incident response crew to you – and they’ll be with you in minutes.

We also use the latest technology, including predictive analytics and machine learning, to identify locations where incidents are likely to occur and put control measures in place to prevent them. So, no matter where you are on the motorway or in a tunnel, we’re always looking out for you.

Remember we are here to help

If you do find yourself on a Transurban road and need help, pull over where safe to do so. We’ll spot you and send help. You can also call 13 33 31.
