From Pozieres in France to Buckingham Place and now Transurban’s Legacy Way tunnel, the Legacy Centenary Torch Relay is travelling across the globe to pay tribute to fallen and returned Australian service men and women - raising awareness of Legacy’s work supporting veterans’ families for the past 100 years.

The Legacy Centenary Torch Relay had exclusive access inside Transurban’s Legacy Way tunnel last week during a routine maintenance closure. While the Transurban maintenance crew were working behind the scenes to keep the tunnel well maintained for motorists, they were also cheering on the torch relay team as they travelled through the tunnel.

Transurban General Manager Assets Angelo Lambrinos said the 4.6 kilometre  tunnel was named in honour of the men and women serving in the Australian Defence Force.

“More than over 24,000 motorists travel through Legacy Way tunnel each day to save time and get to their destination safely. But most would be unaware that by driving through the tunnel, they’re supporting Legacy families, with Transurban and Brisbane City Council donating one cent from every toll to Legacy – that’s around $100,000 each year and more than $700,000 since the tunnel opened.”

Legacy Brisbane President Paul Power said the funds from Legacy Way are used to support the vital services that Legacy provides to veterans’ families after loss or injury of their loved one.

“Legacy supports and empowers our Veterans’ families to build their best future and that’s what this torch relay is about, remembering that promise between mates to look after the missus and kids and looking to the future, to build support for that next generation of veteran families.”
