Two of our NorthConnex team are championing for change by encouraging more women to consider a career in tunnelling.
Tunnellers Tanika Wensley and Sandra Roberts have put the call out for women to join them underground.
Across the project, 11 per cent of technical roles such as engineers, designers and environmental managers are held by females. But the project knows more can be done to encourage diversity in tunnelling.

“I grew up in Canowindra with my brother and dad and would always help out around the property driving tractors. My family has a strong mining background so it was only natural for me to follow in their footsteps,” Tanika explained.
“I think it is important women know they can do anything that men can, and attitudes in mining and construction are changing. My advice to other women wanting to join the industry would be to speak up and let your supervisors and employers know you are capable of doing the same work.
Sandra Roberts has made the change from gold mining to tunnelling and is enjoying her time at NorthConnex.
“I have over 10 years underground experience in gold mining across various projects including as a truck driver, part of the service crew, shotfiring and production drilling,” she said.
“My advice for any female interested in tunnelling is give it a go. Be prepared to come in and work as hard as you possibly can to build your own positive reputation. Be strong, confident and patient. Be willing to learn from the experience of other operators. The more respect you give, the more you will earn and most importantly have fun!”
