Our roads are already among the most technologically advanced in the world, but we continue to prepare them for the future.
Smart roads trial
A key component of smart roads is roadside cameras, and we have more than 5,000 cameras installed across our Australian roads. The cameras automatically detect anomalous traffic patterns, such as congestion and incidents on our roads.
To ensure our cameras function optimally and help keep everyone safe on our roads, they need to be carefully installed, powered, connected, and maintained. And while our technology is already well advanced, we continue looking ahead via trials of new options for installing and managing our roadside camera technology.
We're conducting a smart roads trial (from September 2024) that will investigate:
- How the latest computing technologies can help manage traffic better today and support V2X communications in the future.
- New ways to upgrade cameras and other roadside systems with minimum disruptions to customers using our roads.
- Designing and implementing solutions that are scalable across the network.
Our roads are already smart, but these trials will make it easier for us to make them even smarter in the future.
Recording during trial activities
To facilitate the trial, cameras have been installed in the Cook St, Port Melbourne and Portlink Dr, South Dandenong areas, which will be intermittently recording, during trial activities when project related vehicles are on the road. All footage containing identifiable information including faces and Licence Plate Numbers (LPNs) will be deleted in 90 days in accordance with Transurban’s privacy requirements.
